Seven Night Maximum for Summer Developed Campground Reservations Announced for Algonquin Park

On October 17, 2022, Ontario Parks announced a new 7-night maximum for developed campground reservations during the summer (between July 1 and the Saturday of Labour Day weekend) in Algonquin Park. The previous maximum number of nights for a developed campground reservation was 23. Maximum length of stay rules remain the same for backcountry and roofed accommodations. The entire press release is below.

Ontario Parks Logo"Ontario Parks is continuously looking for ways to provide more people with the opportunity to access Ontario Parks. As a result, Ontario Parks is making changes to the maximum length for campground campsite stays at some of our busier parks. Starting in 2023 for the peak summer operating season, the maximum length of stay will be reduced from 23 nights to seven or 14 nights at select parks. The changes to the campground camping maximum length of stay applies to all stays between July 1 and the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend. Maximum length of stay rules remain the same for backcountry and roofed accommodations. Please see attached for a list of parks and their maximum length of stay rules.

As a previous visitor to one of the parks with a new maximum length of stay rule, we wanted to ensure you were aware of this change prior to making your 2023 summer plans and reservations. Over the past several years, camping at Ontario Parks has grown steadily from 4.3 million camper nights in 2014 to over 6.6 million camper nights in 2021. With reservations on the rise, it has become more difficult for people to make reservations at some of our busier parks. Reducing the maximum length of stay at select parks will provide more people with the chance to camp and experience Ontario’s Parks.

Starting in 2023, the seven and 14-night maximum length of stay changes will apply to all stays between July 1 and the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend, at select parks. Anyone with stays that overlap with the beginning or end of this date range may be eligible for longer stays. For example, in 2023:

For parks with 7-night maximum length of stay:

  • Arrivals between June 15 and June 30 can book a maximum stay to the departure date of July 8
  • Arrivals on August 26 or later will be eligible to book a maximum stay of 23 nights.

For parks with a 14-night maximum length of stay:

  • Arrivals between June 22 and June 30 can book a maximum stay to the departure date of July 15
  • Arrivals on August 19 or later will be eligible to book a maximum stay of 23 nights.

You may be interested to know that Ontario Parks introduced two other features in 2022 to allow customers more opportunity to camp and enjoy Ontario Parks: Availability Notifications and Similar Experiences.

Availability Notifications:

  • This feature offers customers the ability to sign up for email notifications should a campsite that meets their requirements come available at their desired parks.
  • This feature monitors availability and sends customers an instant email notification of newly available sites.

Similar Experiences:

  • Offers customers alternate parks when their first choice is full.
  • This feature will increase customer awareness of other provincial parks and provide alternatives during their desired timeframe.
