History of The Friends of Algonquin Park

The Friends of Algonquin Park LogoThe Friends of Algonquin Park was established in 1983 as a registered charity out of a need to reprint official government publications. Prior to the establishment of The Friends of Algonquin Park, provincial government publications such as the Canoe Routes Map were printed by the Ontario Government with revenues returning to the province's general revenues for reinvestment in all aspects of provincial government, not necessarily Algonquin Park. At a time when reprinting of publications was needed, because stock was exhausted, reprinting funds were not necessarily available as they had been committed to other government priorities.

A group of individuals passionate about Algonquin Park, worked together with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, to develop Ontario's first cooperating association – The Friends of Algonquin Park.

This new organization, led by a volunteer Board of Directors, would work cooperatively with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and would take on the responsibility for selling, and reprinting official Park publications using the revenue generated from their sale. This sales revenue would no longer return to the Ontario Government, but rather stay in the Park to enhance educational publication offerings and more.

Today, the need for The Friends of Algonquin Park has only increased. To find out more about the work and accomplishments of The Friends of Algonquin Park follow the links below.
