Algonquin Park Loon Survey Results

Thank you for submitting your loon observations!

The Friends of Algonquin Park logoSince 1981, staff and visitors have recorded Common Loon observations from Algonquin Park's lakes. Originally started to monitor the effects of acid rain, yearly monitoring has provided useful results for scientists.

On average from 1981 to 2022, nests or young were observed on 41% of the Algonquin Park lakes for which reports were received. The highest number of lakes surveyed is 298 (in 1984) and the lowest is 113 (in 2019). The highest percentage of lakes with nests or young recorded was 52% (in 2013) and the lowest was 21% (in 1983).

Since 1983, The Friends of Algonquin Park have been enhancing research and education in Algonquin Park. It is only through these long-term monitoring efforts can we distinguish real trends from normal yearly fluctuations. That is why we greatly appreciate you submitting your recent Common Loon observations. Thank you!
