Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #102

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 21, 2008
Location: Kilometre 18 (west of Peck Lake Trail)
Result: Successful
Total number of vehicles: 462
Estimated number of people in attendance: 1,848
Number of staff working: 21

How the pack was found:
This pack was found by the naturalist staff on Tuesday, August 19 and heard again on August 20.

What happened at the howl?
This was as close as a "perfect wolf howl" as one can hope for! The weather was good, the crowd was a manageable size and all went smoothly. On the second single howl attempt, we were serenaded by a full wolf pack. After the ten-minute break, we attempted a second howl but the wolves did not respond.

Comments:
Remarkably, we actually had to choose from 5 potential wolf packs to use for this howl. On Tuesday night, the west scouting team found 4 wolf packs and the east scouting team found the usual pack at the East Gate. Based on the excellent response the team heard on the Tuesday night, we decided to try the Km 18 site first on Wednesday night. Again, the response was good, and we decided to hold the Public Wolf Howl at this location.
