Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #99

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 9, 2007
Location: East Park Boundary (east of East Gate)
Result: Successful
Total number of vehicles: 462
Estimated number of people in attendance: 1,848
Number of staff working: 20

How the pack was found:
This pack was first found by the naturalist staff in the first week of August and was used for a successful Public Wolf Howl on August 2, 2007. The pack was again heard on both Tuesday, August 7th and Wednesday, August 8th. However, the pack appeared to have moved farther from the highway.

What happened at the howl?
All cars moved to the howling site in good time and we were able to start the first howling sequence shortly after 10:30 p.m. The pups responded after the second single human howl but it was faint. During our ten-minute break between howls, some people heard a single wolf howling from the north side of the highway (opposite side from the pack). After the second human howl, the pups and adults responded, including the lone adult on the north side. This was an excellent pack response which lasted for a long time!

Comments:
Unfortunately people who were located in the east end of the line (closer to Whitney) likely found it difficult to hear the response. The pack was closer to the East Gate and the pack was heard clearly by people in the middle and those in the west end of the line.
