Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #98

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 2, 2007
Location: East Park Boundary (east of East Gate)
Result: Successful
Total number of vehicles: 372
Estimated number of people in attendance: 1,488
Number of staff working: 21

How the pack was found:
This pack was first found by the naturalist staff on Tuesday, July 31, during normal wolf scouting duties. On Wednesday night, staff again went to the site but the pack did not respond after 3 single and 3 group howls. One staff member went back an hour later and the pack responded after 5 single howls.

What happened at the howl?
All cars moved to the howling site in good time and we were able to start the first howling sequence shortly after 10:00 p.m. The pups and perhaps one or two adults responded after the second single human howl. After the ten-minute break, we howled again but were unsuccessful in our second attempt.

Comments:
Although the night was very warm and humid, and the sound was not carrying very well, everyone should have been able to hear the wolves. The pack remained in the same location from the previous nights.
