Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #97

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 24, 2006
Location: Sanitation Station (at Km 35.6)
Result: Successful
Total number of vehicles: 454
Estimated number of people in attendance: 1,816
Number of staff working: 25

How the pack was found:
The pack was found on Tuesday night by Park staff scouting for wolves. On Wednesday night, the pack again responded to Park staff howling.

What happened at the howl?
For only the third time in the Park's history, this Public Wolf Howl involved walking to the location instead of driving. Park staff led approximately 1,800 people across the highway to the Sanitary Station (800 metres). During the first howling attempt, the full pack (adults and pups) responded to the third single human imitation. After the 10-minute wait, the pack again responded to our howling after three single howls and one 'group' howl (two staff imitating a pack).

Comments:
Although the pack was not close to the highway, everyone, including people in the Outdoor Theatre parking lot, clearly heard the wolves. Both pack responses were excellent with pups and adults howling for an extended time!
