Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #96

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 17, 2006
Location: Jake Lake (at Ksm 26)
Result: Successful
Total number of vehicles: 547
Estimated number of people in attendance: 2,188
Number of staff working: 21

How the pack was found:
This pack was found on Wednesday night by Park staff. When staff drove into the Track and Tower Trail parking lot, they heard a pack spontaneously howling from the east. The staff moved to the Jake Lake area and again the pack spontaneously howled!

What happened at the howl?
The cars were parked on either side of the highway centred west of the Jake Lake parking area with the ends of the lines approximately 0.9 kilometres away. Some vehicles were also parked in the Track and Tower Trail parking lot. During the first howling sequence, howlers used 3 single howls and 1 group howl before the pack responded. As well, a single wolf was heard east of the line of vehicles toward Hemlock Bluff Trail. After the 10-minute wait, a second attempt was made and, although the pack did not respond, the single wolf responded several times.

Comments:
Unfortunately, the pack moved north-east from Wednesday night resulting in a more distant response. People in the centre or east end of the line heard the pack but people on the west end of the line, including the Track and Tower parking lot, could not hear the wolves.
