Synopsis of Public Wolf Howl #95

Date of Public Wolf Howl: Thursday, August 3, 2006
Location: Beaver Pond Trail (at Km 45.2)
Result: Unsuccessful
Total number of vehicles: 398
Estimated number of people in attendance: 1,592
Number of staff working: 21

How the pack was found:
This pack was first heard on Tuesday, August 1st by Park staff. Pups and adults were heard south of the highway likely in the area south-east of Amikeus Lake. Unfortunately, a violent thunderstorm swept through the area on Wednesday (August 2) evening and attempts to locate the pack were cancelled.

What happened at the howl?
The cars were parked on either side of the highway centred at the Beaver Pond Trail with the ends of the lines approximately 0.7 kilometres away. During the first howling sequence, howlers used 3 single howls and 3 group howls but no response was heard. After the 10-minute wait, a second attempt, also unsuccessful, was made.

Comments:
Most of the Park was without power on Thursday and conditions outside the Park were worse. This was likely the reason only 398 vehicles attended the howl (we expected 500+ vehicles).

Although we considered this Public Wolf Howl unsuccessful, wolves were heard by some Park staff! Two staff members were located several kilometres north on Opeongo Road to prevent cars leaving the Lake Opeongo Access Point from interrupting the howling event. At this location, wolves were heard during our howling attempts made along the highway. It is likely the pack had moved from south of the highway on Tuesday night to north of the highway. The pack may have been responding to our howls but it was too far for our human ears to hear their response.
