Algonquin Park's Smoke Lake Hangar Damaged by Severe Weather
At approximately 2:00pm yesterday (August 18, 2015) the Smoke Lake Hangar in Algonquin Park, originally established in 1939, was damaged by high winds associated with a thunderstorm. Damage is visible to the large front doors and a section of the roof. A minor injury was reported from this incident.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry float plane (C-FOEH), stationed in Algonquin Park, escaped damage from the storm. The aircraft was on assignment in another area of the Park at the time.
Although this weather event was characteristic of a microburst, this has not been confirmed by Environment Canada.
Park staff continue to clean up the very localized storm debris and fallen trees. Crews have completed cleaning up the Mizzy Lake Trail (located across from the Smoke Lake Hanger) where a number of trees came down. The trail has since reopened.
