The Algonquin Park Skiers' Association
(APSA) is a group of cross-country skiers who appreciate the special
qualities of the cross-country ski trails in the Park. Since 1991, APSA has worked
cooperatively with Park staff toward the enjoyment of these
trails by the skiing public.
- From 1992-1994, APSA helped
restore the spectacular Fraser Lake and the lovely David Thompson
loops of the Leaf Lake Ski Trail.
- Promoted and played a key
role in building the new Airy bridge (replacing the old Airy trestle)
allowing direct skier access from the village of Whitney to the
50-kilometre network of the Leaf Lake Ski Trail.
- Represented skiers' interests
in the Park's improvement of the Pinetree Loop of the Leaf Lake
Ski Trail.
- In 2004-05, in cooperation
with the Couples Resort, Whitney, and the Ontario Trail Riders'
Association (OTRA) assisted in rebuilding the Fraser Lake Loop
of the Leaf Lake Ski Trail.
- Has provided the Park with
survey data on skier use in Algonquin.
- Advises and works with
Park staff and other trail users for good grooming, trail improvements,
co-operative trail multi-use, and appropriate fees and permits.
- Assists the Park in publicizing
the Park's winter program, notably the unique skiing.
- Provides a forum for Park
skiers, and holds an annual February social get-together —
usually in Whitney — for its widely scattered members and
friends.
